I don't see how people can possibly hate on Shirley. I mean, given the circumstances, it is natural for her to act the way she did. If you compare her to Inoue from Bleach, she's much MUCH? more likable. (at least she didn't scream out "kurosaki" every time she speaks.)

Because he cared for her and knew as long as she loved him she would be in pain. He chose to have her forget him, instead. It might have been the only thing he ever did that wasn't selfish. The fact they go to school together really didn't really matter to him, he knew he could manipulate the student? body at will as he's shown numerous times. Also take note of what CC said on the train, she told him to keep those he cares about at a distance. So he did just that.
